Crowns are artificial caps used to cover teeth for protection or to improve appearance. It can be made in natural tooth colour (from porcelain or bell glass) or in metallic colour (from gold alloys). They are specifically shaped by dental technicians and dentists for the restoration and protection for a badly damaged or root canal treated tooth.
A crown or bridge may be recommended to a patient for the following reasons:
- To restore a damaged tooth and protect the remaining structure following decay removal.
- To reduce impaction and protect a tooth which has been weakened by restorations, decay or cracks.
- To improve a smile, by filling spaces, altering shapes and improving colour.
